Explore West Coast heritage sites with this Heart of the West Coast tour.
On this tour you will visit the Historic Brunner Mine Site, a place of historical significance on the West Coast. Spend some time viewing the old relics and the interpretation panels learning about one of New Zealand’s significant sites.
The Brunner suspension footbridge spans the Grey River, linking both sides of the mine site. This was one of the country’s earliest industrial sites. Coal was mined along with coke, firebricks and other products. These were Manufactured from the 1860’s until the 1940s. The area is well interpreted with a short walk around the historic coke ovens, brick factory and remains of the tunnel entrances.
The break water is an area popular with tourists and locals. You often can view the dolphins who frequent the spot.
There is a viewing platform, a great photo stop. On a clear day you can see Mount Cook alongside the surrounding mountains. You can learn a bit more about the notorious Greymouth Bar. Known as one of the world’s most dangerous river bars to cross. It has claimed many lives over the town’s history.
Shantytown Heritage Park has over 30 historic buildings to explore. Inside the park there are many activities you can do. For example, learn to gold pan and take home what you find (the kids love this)! Take a ride on the steam train where you will take a short ride among the lush rain forest furthermore you can check out the holographic theatre and experience the sawmill an old steam-driven mill. Learn more about our gold mining past. Rich in history of our local area an enjoyable educational activity for all ages.

Explore Brunner Mine Site & Lake Brunner with lunch provided at Kingfisher Restaurant.
On this tour you will visit the Historic Brunner Mine Site, a place of historical significance on the West Coast. The Brunner Mine was a coal mine on the West Coast of the South Island in New Zealand. It was one of several mines situated on the banks of the Grey River, at an area known as “Coal Gorge” between the townships of Stillwater and Taylorville. The area is well interpreted with a short walk around the historic coke ovens, brick factory and remains of the tunnel entrances.
Explore the West Coast with this tour to Lake Brunner, a glacial feed rainforest lake. Lake Brunner is the largest lake in the West Coast Region of New Zealand, located 31 km southeast of Greymouth. The main settlement, Moana, is on its northern shore. It is an important settlement and waystation for local Māori.
With a multiple choice of walking tracks in the Lake Brunner area, our Explore West Coast guide will guide you across the swing bridge giving you views of the Arnold river and a short 30 – 45 minute loop track around native bush with bird song. Spend time down on the lake shore and then a drive around the village taking in more of the views on offer.

Ross Goldfields Information & Heritage Centre is located at the southern end of Aylmer Street and is the one-stop spot for gold mining history and regional information. The centre boasts a small museum where a replica of NZ’s largest gold nugget The Hon Roddy resides. This was uncovered at Ross in 1909.
Award-winning DVD “Ross Gold Town” which plays continuously, numerous models, artifacts, photographs and old newspaper articles. There are also countless research documents available that relate to Ross’ extensive past, including mining and cemetery records.
Walk up to the Glacier terminal face along a marked track following the river bed for those photo opportunities. The track is 30 min return, this can be subject to change due to access restrictions.
Visit the Wildlife Centre home to our native bird, the Rowi Kiwi. An all weather indoor attraction where you can view the rarest Kiwi bird and the Tuatara (a native reptile that once shared the earth with dinosaurs). Spectacular glacier exhibit, interactive displays with West Coast movie viewing and story telling. New Zealand souvenirs gift shop and cafe onsite.
Add on a helicopter scenic 20 minute flight (additional cost applies) that will take you up the Glacier before you then land on top of the Glacier for a spectacular photo opportunity.
Okarito the gem of South Westland. On your way back stop in at Okarito for photos, Ōkārito is a small coastal settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, 127 kilometres southwest of Hokitika, and 10 kilometers from State Highway 6. It is built at the southern end of the Ōkārito Lagoon at the mouth of the Ōkārito River.
